About Breast Reconstruction
Reconstruction surgery for the breasts is performed to restore one or both of the breasts to an attractive appearance in shape and size after a lumpectomy or mastectomy. It's also available to reconstruct a breast damaged by trauma or a birth defect. Advances in reconstructive surgery make it easier for breast cancer patients to feel complete and attain natural-looking breasts even after they have been removed. This surgery may involve several procedures and different stages that can be performed along with your cancer treatment or delayed until a later date. Lindon, UT our Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kimball M. Crofts creates a unique surgical plan with compassion as we help you to restore your appearance and confidence at Aesthetica Plastic Surgery.
What to Expect
Breast reconstruction surgery is performed in various stages. In certain phases (like inserting an expander, or placing implants), general anesthesia may be used. Some patients will need to stay overnight, but this is based on the treatment phase. Once the last step has been completed in the breast reconstruction process, you will wear a supportive bra and you will be prescribed medication by Dr. Crofts to help control discomfort, bleeding, and swelling. Over time, the reconstructed breast(s) should appear more normal so you can feel more confident. Regular monitoring with mammograms and breast exams are essential and highly recommended for your ongoing health.

Reconstruction of the breast(s) is an extremely personalized surgery. Every patient will be required to have an in-depth consultation with Dr. Crofts to create their treatment plan based on their concerns, needs, and suitable options. If you are thinking about breast reconstruction surgery, it is vital that you have realistic expectations for results. While Dr. Crofts aims to create a natural appearance, your newly reconstructed breast(s) may not have the same look, feel, or sensation as your original breast(s). This involves placing a tissue expander under the breast wall and then slowly filling it with saline over the course of 4 – 6 months until the skin is properly stretched. You may then decide whether you would prefer to use breast implants or a fat transfer to create the shape and volume of the breast(s). After your breast reconstruction surgery, you may want to improve the look with areola and nipple reconstruction.
